4 million pronunciations!

November 18, 2016

It seems like yesterday when we were celebrating reaching the landmark figure of 3 million pronunciations on Forvo.

Just over a year later, we're now on 4 million. That's testimony to how much we've grown in the past year and it's thanks to all of you, our users and editors, who make Forvo the place for pronunciation on the internet.

2016 has been a really special year for Forvo. As well as hitting the 4 million mark, we've also surpassed the figure of 14 billion 'listened to' pronunciations. Yes, you heard it right - that little blue play symbol has been clicked over 14 billion times in the lifetime of Forvo. On top of this, we also hit over half-a-million registered users on the site who are making pronunciations in 339 languages.

And apart from those fantastic figues, 2016 has been a great year for Forvo in other respects. At the turn of the year we introduced the ability to record phrases, as well as releasing a new Android app followed closely by the release of a brand new iPhone app.

On top of this we've added some great new features to Forvo such as our events section and our new eLearning channel. You may have noticed that we've redesigned our blog too. In more technical news, Forvo is migrating to PHP 7 and we're also switching the site to https.

But Forvo is much more than just a set of stats. Without our community there would be no Forvo. So we'd like to take this opportunity to dedicate 4 million thanks to all of you who regularly contribute to Forvo and make it such a useful tool to help people learn correct pronunciation.

THANKS x 4 million!!!

(P.S. For those of you wondering what our 4 millionth pronunciation was, it's the word 'spolformig' - a Swedish word which translates as 'fusiform' in English. Fusiform means having a spindle-like shape that is wide in the middle and tapers at both ends. It is a body shape common to many aquatic animals, characterized by being tapered at both the head and the tail.)
